Whether you are making playdough yourself or you simply buy it, the last thing you want to do is take it all out, make a mess for it to only lasts a few minutes. During this time social distancing, we are bringing your ideas that are not only easy, but that have extensions to them, so you do not have to scramble throughout the day to entertain your child. Here are 5 simple and easy ideas to help playdough play last longer:

Ages: 2.5 and up

Subjects: Fine motor, hand-eye coordination, math, language

  1. Covering animal figurines: have them mold the playdough over different animals to create colorful skin, fur, legs, and spikes. For example, mold playdough over an alligator tail, or add some color spikes to a dinosaur.

  2. Adding clothes and accessories to people, dolls, and action figures. For example, give them hats, shoes, or decorate their clothes with polka dots.

  3. Baking: have them make some delicious looking baked goods, such as cakes, cookies, muffins, and cupcakes. If you can give them any of your real kitchen supplies (measuring cups, cupcake liners, spatulas, etc.) for this, it will help with their imagination.

  4. Sculpting: Find something in the backyard, in their room, or on a walk for them to make of their own. For example; a flower, a stuffed animal, or a necklace.

  5. Numbers and Letters: Yes, you can conduct phonics and math lessons during playdough play. Have them copy letters that you have drawn onto a paper or make their own. For older kids, have them construct the letter from different sounds you make. For example, “sssss” have them construct the letter “S.”

Fine Motor & Hand-Eye: They are working on their fine motor muscles by rolling, cutting, and molding. They are working on their hand-eye coordination by them attempting to add accessories to the items as they are coordinating their ideas onto the items.

Math & Language: Letter/number recognition, letter/number forming, and simple math problems/word spelling/or phonics sounds can be asked and answered with playdough.
